At Fast Specialties in Vancouver, Washington, we specialize in helping car enthusiasts bring their classic rides into the modern age. One of the best ways to do this is with the Holley Sniper Fuel Injection system, a top-tier retrofit solution for formerly carbureted vehicles.
Why Choose the Holley Sniper 2 EFI System?
What is an EFI System?
An EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) system in a car is a modern method of delivering fuel to the engine for combustion. Unlike older carburetor systems, which relied on mechanical processes to mix fuel and air before entering the engine, an EFI system uses electronic controls to precisely manage the amount of fuel injected into the engine’s cylinders.
The Evolution: Holley Sniper Version 1
Over the past few years, Holley has developed innovative fuel injection retrofit systems for formerly carbureted vehicles. However, the initial release of the Sniper system had its challenges. Although it was designed as a bolt-on 2 or 4-barrel carburetor replacement that could bring your muscle car into the 21st century, it faced significant issues. Despite being touted as self-learning and easy enough for a weekend mechanic to install, the Sniper 1 systems were plagued by electrical radio interference.
The problem? The compact ECU, fitted where one of the float bowls would typically be on a carburetor, was positioned too close to the spinning electromagnet known as the distributor. This proximity caused radio frequency (RF) interference in about 50% of applications, regardless of whether the vehicle was GM, Ford, or Mopar. Holley’s attempts to solve the issue, including recommendations for new spark plugs, wires, and distributors, weren’t always effective. As a result, several customers chose to return to carburetors, albeit with lighter wallets.
In some cases, desperate attempts were made to mitigate the RF interference, such as wrapping distributors and caps in aluminum foil. (We can only imagine how those conversations went at car shows with the hood popped!)
Enter Holley Sniper 2: The Game Changer
Fortunately, Holley has completed their research and development and addressed the issues that plagued the early units. We’ve installed and tuned several Sniper 2 systems here at Fast Specialties, and we’re happy to report that these units are now virtually problem-free.
Improved Computer System
The Holley Sniper 2 features an improved ECU with enhanced RFI shielding, effectively eliminating the radio interference issues of the past. Additionally, the board now includes a contactless throttle position sensor, which offers greater durability and precision.
Upgraded Body Design
The Sniper 2’s body has been redesigned for improved performance and aesthetics. The new cast-in internal fuel crossover reduces the use of rubber components, which can be potential leak points. The injector connections have also been redesigned to ensure a more secure fit, resulting in a cleaner installation and fewer concerns about leaks.
One of the most appreciated updates is that the throttle extension, which was optional in the first generation for overly-sensitive throttles, is now built into the Sniper 2.
Enhanced Performance
The Sniper 2 is equipped with four 100 lb/hr injectors that support up to 650 horsepower naturally aspirated, and 575 horsepower under boost, just like the Sniper 1. Additionally, the throttle shaft and plate geometry have been redesigned to improve throttle pedal feel, making your driving experience smoother and more responsive.
